The individual unit is usually installed above a ceiling, inside a mechanical closet or within another interior utility space and connected to the building’s shared water loop.

What Is a Water-Source Heat Pump?

A water-source heat pump transfers heat between the conditioned space and a circulating building water loop. Unlike a conventional air-source system with an outdoor condenser, the complete heat-pump unit is generally located inside the building.

During cooling, the equipment removes heat from the space and transfers it into the water loop. During heating, it extracts available heat from that loop and delivers it indoors. Many buildings use a central boiler and cooling tower to maintain the proper loop temperature.
